origin: The openening acoustic guitar sequence was orignally a ditched arrangement written by Aaron Clark. He played it for Simbarashe at his apartment in Sacramento the week they recorded "I Don't Believe You". Simbarashe asked Aaron if he to could take it and make a whole song out of it.
Simbarashe: I was hanging out with a friend, and one morning we were in San Francisco when I just started singing the words to what would become "Chickens Outside My Window" on the spot. I think I sang it every day after that [to myself] for about two weeks, just cos I thought it was a novel idea; Christians moving into an atheist's town and building up an influence around this person, when they know that inevitably they'll be assimilated. Then later on, Aaron, Jesse and I were at Aaron's apartment when he played this tune [that would beome the song]. I think I sang the chorus on top of it, and it just fit perfectly. It was so surreal.
fun fact: The song was actually recorded 5 different ways before the studio version you hear was settled on. When Aaron first heard [the first draft of the final version], he wasn't really blown away. He wanted orchestra strings in that openening sequence when the guitars are soaring. That little solo electric guitar that screams just before the verse starts, that was the comprimise. He was happy with that.
